ID: brolizum-100-mg

Pembrolizumab is a cancer immunotherapy drug used to treat various types of cancer, often sold under the brand name Keytruda. BROLIZUM 100 MG appears to be a regional or generic brand name for pembrolizumab, specifically indicating a 100 mg dose.

Here is an overview of the drug:

How it works

Pembrolizumab is a type of monoclonal antibody that works by targeting the PD-1 (programmed cell death protein 1) receptor on T-cells.

  • The PD-1 protein can prevent the immune system from attacking cancer cells.
  • By blocking the interaction of the PD-1 receptor with its ligands (PD-L1 and PD-L2), pembrolizumab "releases the brakes" on the T-cells, allowing them to recognize and attack the cancer cells.

Uses

Pembrolizumab is approved to treat many types of cancer, including:

  • Melanoma (skin cancer)
  • Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)
  • Head and neck squamous cell cancer (HNSCC)
  • Classical Hodgkin lymphoma
  • Urothelial cancer (bladder and urinary tract cancer)
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer)
  • Certain types of breast, cervical, and esophageal cancers

Administration

  • Pembrolizumab is given as an intravenous (IV) infusion, typically in a hospital or clinic.
  • The 100 mg dose is administered over a period of about 30 minutes.
  • The frequency of the infusions varies, usually every three or six weeks, depending on the type of cancer and the treatment plan.

Common side effects

Some of the common side effects of pembrolizumab can include:

  • Fatigue
  • Nausea and decreased appetite
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Rash and itching
  • Fever
  • Musculoskeletal pain

Important considerations

  • Immune-mediated side effects: Because pembrolizumab works by activating the immune system, it can cause the immune system to attack healthy organs and tissues. The most common targets are the lungs, liver, kidneys, and hormone-producing glands.
  • Serious reactions: Allergic or infusion-related reactions can occur during or shortly after the treatment. Symptoms can include flushing, chills, breathing difficulties, or dizziness.
  • Prescription required: This is a prescription medication that must be administered and managed by a healthcare professional.
