ID: reomen-50-mg-tablet

Reomen 50 mg is a brand name for the generic medication clomiphene citrate, which is an oral fertility drug used to induce ovulation (egg production) in women who are unable to become pregnant due to irregular or absent ovulation.

Key Information

  • Active Ingredient: Clomiphene Citrate.
  • Therapeutic Class: Ovulation stimulant / Drugs for infertility.
  • Mechanism of Action: It works by making the body think estrogen levels are low, which prompts the pituitary gland to release more follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). These hormones then stimulate the growth of ovarian follicles and the release of an egg (ovulation).
  • Manufacturer: It is manufactured by Eskayef Pharmaceuticals Ltd..

Uses (Indications)

Clomiphene citrate is primarily indicated for female patients who wish to become pregnant but are not ovulating properly, provided their partner is fertile and other causes of infertility have been ruled out. Specific conditions treated include:

  • Ovulatory failure/dysfunction
  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
  • Secondary amenorrhea (absence of menstruation) of unknown cause or following oral contraceptive use
  • Menorrhagia caused by hyperplastic endometrium
  • In some cases, it may also be used to treat male infertility (oligospermia and poor sperm motility), but this is typically off-label and requires close medical supervision.

Dosage and Administration

The medication is typically taken orally for 5 days. A healthcare provider will determine the exact start date (usually around day 2 to 5 of the menstrual cycle).

  • Initial Dose (Females): The usual first course is one 50 mg tablet daily for 5 days.
  • Subsequent Doses: If ovulation does not occur, the dose may be increased to 100 mg daily for 5 days in subsequent cycles (after a 30-day break and a negative pregnancy test).
  • Monitoring: Treatment should be supervised by a doctor with a complete pelvic exam before each course to check for pregnancy, ovarian cysts, or ovarian enlargement.
  • Duration: Long-term use is not recommended; treatment usually does not exceed a total of about six cycles.

Potential Side Effects and Warnings

Common side effects are generally mild and transient.

  • Common Side Effects: Vasomotor flushing (hot flashes), headache, nausea, vomiting, breast discomfort, abdominal/pelvic pain, and visual symptoms (blurred vision, spots or flashes).
  • Serious Side Effects (Seek immediate medical attention): Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS, which includes severe abdominal pain/bloating and rapid weight gain), significant visual disturbances (which can be permanent in rare cases), or signs of an allergic reaction.
  • Risks: Clomiphene use increases the chance of multiple pregnancies (e.g., twins).
  • Contraindications: Do not take if you are already pregnant, have liver disease, ovarian cysts (other than PCOS), or abnormal vaginal bleeding of undetermined origin.
